INSTRUCTION
TASK 1
For this task 1, participants were required to
propose ideas as a group to make the urban mobility
experience better. So we started by coming up with
ideas. There are 8 ideas in the document. We tried
to come up with ideas from our daily life concerns
or problems, so that it would be easier to conduct
the field trip.
Idea gathering document
We showed the document to the teacher, and he
suggested discarding the ideas where you need to
build/engineer something (canopy walk, tourist
bench), and other ideas should be developed further
with details. So we did quick research and developed
ideas like the document below. We did research and
included the references to the ideas.

We consulted again with the teacher, and he approved 3
ideas: Pedestrian resting/ wayfinding shade
points in Melaka, Road painting that makes
crossing the road safer in Bandar Sunway,
and Mobility assessment map of roads for
wheelchair users in Bandar Sunway. We discussed
choosing one idea. In the end, we chose the second
idea: Road painting that makes crossing the road safer
in Bandar Sunway, since it's a common problem we see
in daily life.
We moved on to create a slide. We divided tasks and
were assigned like below.

We could understand more about road safety by
searching for examples of solutions, not just by
directly doing sketches. In the slide, we tried to use
many pictures to give the visual references for
viewers.
In the sketch, we tried to use a different direction
for each. Sketch 1 uses technology, and sketch 3
tackled it from more creative way.

TASK 2
For this task 2, participants were required to
collect data to understand more about the idea
they proposed in task 1.
First, we started to determine how we would do
the data collection; these were the options
below
How can we research
• Interview with pedestrians, drivers
• Interview with experts
• Online research(only this result in
low score)
• Visiting gallery, museum, company,
community
• Field trip, observation, video
recording
• Google Form questionnaire
Thought about the tight deadline for
submission, we removed facility visits and
expert interviews from the list, which need
scheduling. We chose online research and a
field trip since they can collect good data
without so much effort. Additionally, we
decided to do the Google Form questionnaire by
team voting, so that we can get opinions from
citizens.
After that, we moved to working on the data
collection by dividing the team into each 3
methods.

My divided task was field trip, so I went to the
specific place we chose. It was just a road,
nothing special, so I thought about how to collect
data before going there. I did these activities
below in field trip.
• Taking pictures, videos
• Counting the number of vehicles passed by
in a minute
• POV video of crossing the road
• Walk slowly and cross the road to feel
like the elderly, people with gait disturbance
• Walk with a stride of about 50cm and
estimate the crossing length
• Measure the time of crossing the road
Since the location was close to my house, I
went there during the day and night to see
the difference. In the end, I could get a
lot of notes to show in the slide from these
activities.
The refined idea is below. We would use
this as the sketch of the final output. The
idea mostly came from the solutions we
studied through tasks 1 and 2. As the one consulted on the field trip, I
could design while considering how it can
eliminate the existing problem.

FINAL TASK
In this final task, we needed to create a
final output of our idea. We decided to
create realistic road painting images as
task 2, a refined idea, and also the poster
to show what this paint is. We thought that
realistically depicting what it would look
like may make it easier to convey its
function and necessity, and we also wanted
to use the poster to raise awareness about
traffic accidents and road safety among the
elderly and people with gait
disturbance.
It was simple what we needed to do, so we
started working on it by dividing the tasks
like below

I was responsible for making the realistic
road painting image, since I learned the
basics of Illustrator and Photoshop in the
previous semester, I suggested that it could
be created using them.
The making process was time-consuming, taking
care of the details to make it look realistic.
We chose to edit 2 photos, one is a daytime
Google Street screenshot, and the other is a
night photo, as the teacher wanted to see the
visibility at night.

We first draw the painting in Illustrator. We
found the details that we needed to take care
of as proceeding, such as shadow, distance
perspective, so it was time-consuming and
burdensome. For the footsteps and pictogram,
we used these free downloads,

We tried the different colors of the
painting during the process, but chose green
and yellow since these colors are more
effective at attracting attention and
maintaining visual

And we did not change anything between
daytime and night images. As we found in the
field trip, task 2, there are
bright electric lights built at every
certain distance. So it seems like no
problem for the visibility, even for the
elderly.

After the Illustrator process, we added some
effects to make it realistic in Photoshop. We
mainly added the noise and blur to fit the
photos. I feel it became much more realistic
by blurring the paint's boundaries and adding
noise to create a rough road texture.

The final slide and presentation recording are
below. We included the process of Tasks 1 and
2 in the details, so that viewers are able to
follow our progress and see how we utilized
the learning in our final output.

FEEDBACK
Week 1:
Remove the ideas that need to be
constructed. For other ideas,
develop further.
Week 2:
The 3 ideas are good: Pedestrian
resting / wayfinding shade points
in Melaka, Road painting that
makes crossing the road safer in
Bandar Sunway, and Mobility
assessment map of roads for
wheelchair users in Bandar Sunway.
But need to find a specific
location for this task.
Week 3:
Our slide looks good, just need
to complete it.
Week 4:
Our task 2 slide looks
good.
Week 5:
The idea for the final output is
good to go. We need to draw the
sketch for the final output.
Week 6:
We need to include 200 words
rationale from task 1. And we should
make the night version of a
realistic road painting image, not
only the daytime, to see the
visibility at night.
REFLECTION
This class was interesting and
realistic because we solved problems
based on real-world experiences. While
I've had similar classes before, this
time, instead of just defining the
problem and solution, we conducted
further research and refined the idea.
I felt it would be useful if I became
a professional. Also, finding a
problem from scratch and proposing
solutions taught me the importance of
consistency and having diverse
visions.
Our idea was road paint to improve
safety, but surprisingly, there wasn't
much reference material online, and we
struggled to find good resources.
However, I think we were able to
create a well-thought-out idea as the
final output by combining various
resources.
Personally, I haven't had much
experience as a leader in group work
before, so I learned a lot this time.
I think I was able to actively
contribute ideas and communicate with
other members in this class's tight
schedule. However, one area for
improvement is that, due to the
limited submission time, I prioritized
efficiency and ended up working by
myself. Also, we couldn't have had
many opportunities to discuss the
team's direction together. I want to
be more careful next time if I have
the chance to work as a leader.
